Reading to puppets:
building confidence through story
unique 6-8 week literacy programme for KS1 & KS2 pupils, inspired by our family show The Boy Who Read Aloud to the Sea.
What is Reading to Puppets?
Reading to Puppets is an innovative workshop programme designed by Strange Futures Theatre, inspired by the proven success of the Reading to Dogs model. Over six - eight weeks, children are invited to read aloud in one-to-one sessions with puppet companions — friendly, interactive characters brought to life by trained Strange Futures puppeteers.
The programme helps pupils build confidence in reading aloud, enjoy books in a playful way, strengthen oracy and comprehension, and experience the safety of a non-judgemental listener who encourages even the most anxious readers

How It Works
Schools can choose to begin the programme with a performance of The Boy Who Read Aloud to the Sea, though this is not essential. Across the weekly sessions, pupils spend time with a puppet companion from the show — such the Car, or the Cat. Each child reads a custom-made storybook, matched to their reading age and linked to the puppet character.
The stories grow more complex each week, moving from simple storytelling to short duologues that gently encourage more expressive reading. Throughout the sessions, the puppets respond, nod, and listen, creating a safe and playful space for children to explore their voices.
Why It Matters
Research shows that reading aloud boosts not only literacy but also confidence, communication, and wellbeing. For many children, especially those with dyslexia, social anxiety, SEND, or neurodivergence, reading aloud can feel daunting. Puppets provide a judgement-free listener, breaking down barriers and helping children discover the joy of reading aloud.

Benefits for Schools
The programme supports National Curriculum aims in literacy, oracy and comprehension, while complementing existing phonics and reading schemes. It is particularly effective for pupils whose reading age is below their chronological age, giving them space to practise at their own level in a supportive setting.
Reading to Puppets also benefits children with SEND or those who are neurodivergent, providing a calm, non-judgemental listener that helps reduce anxiety around reading aloud. The gradual progression of the stories builds confidence and fluency step by step, while the interactive element of the puppets encourages oracy, comprehension, and expressive use of language.
Teachers can expect to see measurable improvements in confidence, willingness to read aloud, and overall enjoyment of reading. Above all, the programme offers a creative and memorable experience that children look forward to each week.
Delivery
The programme is designed as a six - eight week course but can be adapted to shorter formats where needed. It is suitable for KS1 and KS2 pupils (Years 1–6, ages 5–11), and can take place in classrooms, libraries, or small group settings. Books and materials are designed for progressive use, allowing schools to extend the programme or return for follow-up cycles.
Sessions are led by Strange Futures’ associated artists, who are trained in puppetry and literacy support. All facilitators are fully DBS-checked. Strange Futures is an award-winning, neurodiverse-led theatre company with extensive experience of working in schools and communities.
